About Pinot Gris
Pronounced "pea-kno gree" Pinot Gris (also known as Pinot Grigio) is a close relative to Pinot Noir and generally grows well in cooler climates.
The name comes from the French works for "Pine" and "Grey" because bunches resemble pinky-greyish small pinecones.
Styles can range from the bright fresh which are lovely with salads, appetizers and simply prepared fish and shellfish to the almost unctuous Alasace interpretations which are more like chardonnay. As well as these differences it can scale from dry to medium to sweet making it diverse.... and often misunderstood.
Viticulture, climate and soil
Pinot Gris is a varietal grown in France, Italy, Germany and in recent years has seen a flourish in popularity in the New World. It is a versatile grape, but the best results seem to come from cool climates. When made with care and cropped at low levels Pinot Gris has fabulous food versatility and rich extract of tree fruits such as peaches and pears. Pinot Gris exhibits an exciting spicy quality and acidity in the mouth.
Central Otago
Being closely related to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris has found a home in Central Otago and is quickly becoming one of the significant grapes of the region. Again there are many styles made here, but they all have in common, good palate and fruit weight, that comes from long, hot days, lots of sunshine and cool evenings, creating slow ripening for added intensity.
Amisfield Wine Company
Often described as an enigma, Amisfield Pinot Gris manages to tread the fine line between barrel fermented, full bodied Alsatian wine and crisp lively Pinot Grigio.
Made from 4 clones, we treat our pinot gris as we do our pinot noir. Complexity that starts in the vineyard with various soil types and continues in the winery with a number of ferments some wild and in barrel to give depth and palate weight and some in stainless steel tanks to add vibrant fruit and a crisp finish, these components marry into a wine of considerable depth wrapped in a silky, supple texture.
